Jean-Paul Garnier
A rare and early wooden cased “pendule portative” by the eminent carriage clock maker Paul Garnier.
Jean-Paul Garnier (1801-1869) is generally considered to be the founder of the Paris carriage clock industry and there is much information about him in Allix and Bonnert’s “Carriage Clocks” and also in Derek Roberts’ “Carriage and other travelling clocks.
This example with the characteristic round ebauche used in his wooden cased clocks is of rosewood inlaid with engraved brass and mother of pearl and strikes the hour and half hour on a bell.
The clock is signed both on the dial and the back plate of the movement for Jean Paul Garnier and is numbered 3110 both on the movement and the case.
The front of this fine clock incorporates a rising glazed panel for the adjustment of the time.

A fine miniature carriage clock standing just 4 ½” high with the handle raised, by this celebrated firm of Parisian clockmakers.
By the end of the 19th, Century, Margaine was a name synonomous with the most beautiful and the best of carriage clocks.
This high quality and charming mignionette is in gilded brass with silvered colomns and bears the mark of Margaine on the movement.It comes with its original leather covered travelling case
The dial bears the name of the retailer, the famous firm of Camerer Kuss & Co.

Again the tortoiseshell case is in exceptional condition and all of the mounts, bezel, handle, hinge and feet of this clock are in solid hall marked gold, which is highly unusual and makes this delightful clock very much something of a rarity.
